As 2017 draws to a close, we’re taking some time out on holiday, having Christmas together. We thought it would be fun to look back on the year just gone and share our highlights and favourites. 2017 brought us back to old favourites, One Pico, Mulberry Garden, Etto. As well as to new spots, Richmond, DeVilles and Forest Avenue. Of course it also had lots of gin, Mór, Bertha’s Revenge, Monkey 47 to name a few and a few very nice wines!
2017 is the year Gin & Griddle became an award winning blog, so it will always be special – Best Food Review Blog at the Blog Awards Ireland. To have Gin & Griddle recognized in this way was wonderful.

Gin & Griddle’s Favourite Restaurant of 2017
Chef Ciaran McGill, and all of the team at One Pico are doing fantastic work in creating a warm and inviting restaurant with superb service and excellent food. It’s been a favourite of ours for such a long time and will continue to be. Their lunch tasting menu represents excellent value too and we always enjoy every morsel at One Pico. For special occasions or just when you fancy a nice meal, One Pico is really hard to beat. Click on the Souffle below to read about the Tasting Menu at One Pico…
Etto occupies a small unit on Merrion Row. Inside it’s cosy and casual, kind of wine bar-esque, white walls, simple decor with all the focus on serving great food & wine. Our favourite place to sit is at the bar. Wine recommendations are always on point here, we’ve had some great reds and they offer a nice choice by the glass too. By far our favourite thing to eat here is their Côte de bœuf served with bordelaise sauce and crispy garlic potatoes, it’s €59 for 2 and is one of the most delicious things you will eat. We often share a starter (so we’ve room for the beef!), they have a lovely selection of nibbles too.
Gin & Griddle’s Favourite Bar of 2017
Not so much bar as wine shop cum wine bar, there was no question in this category – Grapevine in Dalkey. With a buzzy and relaxed atmosphere, lots of seating, knowledgeable and friendly staff, it’s a really enjoyable place to spend a couple of hours, or just to pop in to pick up a bottle of something nice to have at home. The choice of wines is excellent at all price points, offering wines by the glass and bottle on the menu, but you can also pick from the shelves with €7 corkage on any bottle of wine.
Gin & Griddle’s Favourite Gin of 2017
This was a very easy decision, although there’s been lots of gins we have loved this year, Bertha’s Revenge Small Batch Irish Milk Gin was easily the highlight. Using whey alcohol from local dairy farms, together with natural well water and locally foraged and grown botanicals, the team at Ballyvolane have created a super gin.
On the nose, this gin is a classic, lots of juniper, with the spice coming through with notes of cardamon and cumin, and then the citrus – lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit. A smooth and complex gin, a perfect blend of sweetness, herbs and pepper. Citrus flavours at first followed by strong spice flavours with the cardamom coming to the fore, making it quite different to other gins, it’s warming and almost creamy.

Gin & Griddle’S Favourite Experience of 2017
The sunny summer day no doubt helped this but the Dublin Bay Cruise from Dun Laoghaire to Howth was one of our favourite things we did this year. A beautiful crossing, with stunning landscapes, you really do forget what amazing sights and amenities we have close by here in Dublin. We had lunch in Howth, fish & chips (of course) at Crabby Jo’s.
