With a few days off, and not wanting to travel far we decided to treat ourselves to a night in our home city, Dublin. We booked a room in The Shelbourne Hotel and headed into town early to fully enjoy our stay.
The Shelbourne is a beautiful hotel, and all the elements of it’s 5 star status are on display as you enter through the revolving doors, luxe flower displays, gold, marble, antique and dark woods, art, sculptures and paintings, guide you through to the reception area. As part of the Marriott group, The Shelbourne is very popular with American tourists and coach groups and tours also. Check-in was smooth and easy, and our room was ready for us.
We didn’t linger long, dropped our bags, unpacked a little and out for a stroll. We browsed through the shops, sat outside in the warm sunshine for a drink then back to the hotel to relax for a while before dinner.
Back in the hotel, our room was quite big for a standard room, with a king bed, desk area, large chair and footstool next to the TV TV area, then steps up to a dressing area and through to the bathroom. The shower was in the bath and it was one of the only problems as the shower head was positioned very low and couldn’t go any higher, fine for me but not really for my 6ft+ husband.
Our room was near the lift so at times it was a little noisy but for the one night we were there, no concern for us. The bed was extremely comfortable, I know most hotel beds are, but this one seemed to have extra comfyness built in!
We didn’t experience too much of the hotel due to this being a short visit . We booked dinner in Etto, which is located very near to the hotel, and a superb spot. If you visit Etto, definitely try the Cote du Boeuf, it’s sublime. The Horseshoe Bar in The Shelbourne was perfect for a glass of wine after dinner. We nabbed two stools at the bar, savoured our drinks and indulged in some people watching before bed. Our rate was room only, but with so many options breakfast options on our doorstep this was no hardship the next morning.
Wonderfully situated, right on St. Stephen’s Green, with the park, restaurants, bars, cafes, museums, sights, shops… The Shelbourne is hard to beat for a stay in Dublin.
