A sunny warm evening after work and we fancied sitting outside for a bite to eat. Having heard good things about this new spot in Mount Merrion we decided to go there, knowing they had a nice terrace area. Union Cafe is a market, deli, restaurant and bar in Mount Merrion, located in what used to be Kielys (for anyone familiar with the area).
There wasn’t too many people there when we arrived but it was early on a Tuesday evening. We had a little look inside – it’s cosy yet spacious, with a casual feel. We headed back outside to the restaurant terrace where we ordered a bottle of white wine, a Fossil Bay Chardonnay (€30) for the nice sunny evening that it was. On the wine menu, it was stated as being from New Zealand, which we thought was a little odd but thinking it might have been a mistake on the menu we ordered anyway and sure enough when it arrived it was Australian. A fresh, crisp easy drinking Chardonnay.
We decided to start with a sharing starter, the Antipasti Board which had tapenade, artichoke, manchego cheese, meats and breads (€14.00). For main courses we actually both chose the same one which doesn’t normally happen – Sea Bass, asparagus and basil crushed potatoes with a sorrell hollandaise sauce (€27).
The antipasti was good, perfect size to share between two as a small starter with a nice selection. But the main course was where the food really shone. The Sea Bass was one of the most delicious plates of food. A good sized piece of fish, cooked perfectly with the most gorgeous potatoes (I’d happily go back just for them!).
While the setting and style is casual, the menu is more of a mix. There’s no early bird menu or set menu so it’s just the a la carte although since we visited a couple of weeks ago the menu looks to have changed somewhat and now includes pizza.
We really liked Union Cafe, mainly for the food and the terrace area. It’s lovely to be able to dine outdoors when the weather is good. Small things like the typos on the menu (the new zealand chardonnay wasn’t the only mistake there!) and the napkins (the thinnest papery napkins which just don’t match the place or price point) need fixing in my view. However we will return, as the food was excellent, service was good and it’s a great addition to the area. I look forward to seeing how it evolves and especially through the summer with that great outside dining area.
