When I saw Fish Shack was getting a permanent home in what used to be The Martello in Sandycove / Dun Laoghaire, I was very excited. Having enjoyed great fish and chips from the shack on the pier we were keen to see what the cafe would offer. So after a walk on the pier and along the seafront, we headed into the Fish Shack Cafe, taking a seat on the small front terrace as it was quite mild out and we were just there for a quick bite to eat.
A great menu with mostly seafood options (there is a burger on there), I could happily have ordered anything and everything from it. While the ‘lobster loco’ – half grilled lobster with warm lemon butter served with chips or salad (€19) was very appealing, as was ‘shrimp nachos’ (€12), it was the special of grilled sole on the bone with a lemony butter (€15.95) that won for me. With a choice of chips or salad to accompany I chose the latter (knowing I could rob a chip or two from him!). He had the fish & chips (€13) – fresh haddock in a light tempura batter.
The sole was beautiful, light, flaky and delicious, falling off the bone. The citrus butter complementing it perfectly and served with a green salad. His fish was good, although the batter had a lot of seasoning and chilli that distracted from the fish… it wasn’t as good as the fish from the shack on the pier which was a pity. Seems like if it’s not broken, don’t fix it… chips were excellent though.
There’s a short wine list, beers & prosecco available, but on this visit we were sticking with the diet cokes! With 2 diet cokes (at €3 ea) our bill came to €34.95 – very reasonable for what we had and we will certainly return to try more of what the Fish Shack Cafe has to offer. A great new spot to try this weekend!
