In looking for restaurants around Notting Hill online, I came across Electric Diner. Thinking it looked like a good spot, we booked in for a breakfast during our few days in London recently. This was definitely an excellent decision!
It’s an all day spot, located next to and part of one of the oldest cinemas in London. Breakfast from 8am each day, all-day menu from 12 and serves til late and has a full bar, beers, wines, cocktails. Its a long and reasonably narrow room with the ceiling kind of like a ‘tunnel’ sloping to the sides but it doesn’t feel dark…a beautiful tiled floor, dark red leather booths, wood, exposed brick, retro (cool!) light fittings. The kitchen is open, behind the bar area so you can see all the going-ons! Electric Diner is part of the Soho House group, who have a number of restaurants, houses and hotels in the UK and North America.
Back to breakfast … the menu has lots of nice choices, lots of egg based dishes, along with English breakfast, omelette, smoked salmon, waffles, quite traditional brunchy food with little twists.
Having looked at the menu online I knew what I was ordering – avocado on toast, chilli, poached egg (£8) – this is my idea of the perfect breakfast / brunch (even lunch) dish. He chose the English breakfast (£12). We added juices (£3), orange for him, pink grapefruit for me and coffees (£3), a double espresso for him and a cappuccino for me.
My avocado was sensational, so much avocado on top a slice of brown toasted bread, a perfect poached egg on top and just the right amount of chilli spice for breakfast! His breakfast, while good, was hard to find the match to the £12 pricetag… fried egg, one sausage, a slice of toast, a small piece of bacon (more like pork belly / quite fatty), a roasted tomato, a mushroom and a little tin of baked beans. Definitely no comparison to the avocado!.
The juices were good, although similar to the English breakfast, fairly pricey for the size at £3 – freshly squeezed though! I loved my cappuccino but the double espresso was more akin to a single espresso in size which was a pity! Despite these little things, we enjoyed Electric Diner. He would just pick differently next time! We sat on stools at a wide counter area at the front, with the window to the street, a perfect people watching spot…
Overall a great find and a place we really liked! If you’re around the Portobello markets and Notting Hill area when in London pop by! I know we will back on future visits to London town, perhaps for lunch next time!
