A sunny Sunday afternoon and the perfect place to spend a couple of hours is in Dun Laoghaire – a walk along the seafront and the pier, Teddys ice cream, a drink outside enjoying that sunshine and then dinner… this time we fancied burgers and as luck will have it, the best burgers in Dublin (in Gin & Griddle’s opinion!) are to be found here in Real Gourmet Burger. When we lived nearby in Dalkey we were frequent visitors, less so now but its still more than worth the trip.
The only thing that can be offputting at Real Gourmet Burger is the seating, its a small space with a lot of tables in it. And you can find yourself squashed into a small table with people very close to you at the next tables. However it is a casual spot where you are not going to linger. We were lucky to get one of the nice tables for 2 along the side. We started with chicken wings… a nice size to share, spicy and with the requisite celery and blue cheese mayo dip.
For me, a burger and guacamole are a match made in heaven so I was always getting the Guacamole Burger which is described as “Zesty guacamole, melted aged Irish cheddar, crispy pancetta and our real relish”. Its the same for him in that blue cheese is his go to when it comes to Burgers – “Melted Cashel Blue Cheese with homemade red onion marmalade and a side of blue cheese mayo”. The Burgers come with skinny chips with rosemary salt. The prices are generally around €10 for the burgers with chips. We both had beef burgers, but there’s also lamb, chicken and vegetable options.
The Burgers are juicy and so tasty. There’s lots of filling, but also just so it doesn’t overpower the burger itself or mean you can’t pick it up to eat. Although it can be difficult so sometimes a fork and knife is required! The blue cheese is proper blue cheese (not the mayo some burger places use in their ‘blue cheese’ burger) and you can really taste the fresh, quality ingredients in the burgers. They are proper burgers, full of flavour in soft poppy seed buns. The photos tell the story of how good the burgers are better than anything I can say here…
We had a nice bottle of Wolf Blass Shiraz with our burgers and the total with service was around €60. Great value and well worth the trip to the seaside!
Our pre-dinner Gin & Tonics at Oliveto in The Kingston Hotel, a seat with a view!
