It had been a while since our last visit to Mulberry Garden, so we booked in for a Friday evening in January. We hadn’t intended to have the tasting menu but when we got there, liking everything on it, we decided to go for it and settled in for an evening of delightful food and wine. Mulberry Garden offers seasonal menus that change weekly.
While the menu is officially six courses, in reality there are surprise dishes in between each of the courses. We included the wine flight also, so had to pick nothing, making it very easy for us.
The standout dish for me was the tartare. Not normally a fan of beef tartare this was exceptional, balanced flavours and devoured by us both. The only complaint was how long we were there, yes it’s a tasting menu of many courses so I expect to be there a few hours, but there were long gaps in between some of the courses. Our mains were switched so we had meat before fish, as the kitchen was obviously very busy and under pressure. At the end we asked to speed things along so we could enjoy our dessert and cheese board.
The delay didn’t take away from how good the food is, the quality of the ingredients, cooking and presentation. A few tweaks and it would have been a perfect evening, as it was it though we thoroughly enjoyed it, and we will definitely return. Our total bill, not including service, came to €250 – 2 x Tasting Menu at €75 ea. and 2 x Wine Flight at €50 ea.
A little about the setting, tucked away off the main thoroughfare in Donnybrook, in an old cottage from the early 1900s, through a bright pink gate, Mulberry Garden is all about celebrating Ireland, whether it’s the food or the Irish wool adorning the walls, Oscar Wilde quotes, Irish artworks and linen. There’s a lovely little terrace to the front for al fresco drinks in the summer months. Inside it’s warm and inviting. The perfect place to while away a few hours with delicious food, drink and company.
