I debated whether or not to write a post on the upcoming referendum, this is a food blog after all. But a couple of things have made me think I want to put it out there front and centre … so here it is, this Friday I will be voting YES, proudly, happily and with every part of me.
Next month we celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary. On a sunny and warm June day in 2010, in the beautiful surrounds of Mount Juliet, we got married. In front of our families and friends, we vowed to love each other, in sickness and in health, to comfort and honour each other always. It was the best day of my life, I married my best friend, the person that loves me unequivocally and is my biggest supporter, as I am his.
Why shouldn’t everyone be able to enjoy that, celebrate their love and their commitment to each other… what does gender have to do with it? This referendum is about marriage and ensuring that whoever you love, you can get married to them. It is not about surrogacy, adoption or any of the other spurious nonsense adorning our lamp posts in the form of ‘vote no’ posters…
Voting yes is simply the right thing, it’s about equality for everyone – what’s not to agree with there?
What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined together, to strengthen each other in all labour, to minister to each other in all sorrow, to share with each other in all gladness, to be one with each other in the silent unspoken memories – To be one with each other by George Eliot
