While enjoying our stay at Lyrath Estate Hotel we indulged in Afternoon Tea. After a morning in the spa, luxuriating in the gorgeous indoor / outdoor hydrotherapy pool, sauna and relaxing room, we had forgone lunch to be able to really make the most of Afternoon Tea.
Afternoon Tea is served in a cafe space at the end of the lobby area. Really comfortable chairs and nice views across the grounds. We had a lovely window table too. It’s quite noisy though as the space is open to the large lobby area and there’s lots of comings and goings around it.
First up the teas, peppermint for me and an espresso for him! We added a glass of Prosecco (we were on holidays afterall) and waited on the delights to follow. Afternoon Tea at Lyrath is €17.50 per person, or €25 with a glass of Prosecco; so its quite reasonably priced. The menu included the standard savouries, breads, and sweet treats!
Baked Callan ham sandwiches, smoked salmon on brown bread with dill cream cheese and egg mayo wrap. On the next level, banana bread, fruit cake and fruit scones served with butter, jam and clotted cream. And then the sweet layer, passion fruit pannacotta, lemon meringue, chocolate mousse and Bailey’s cheesecake.
We started with the savoury, both the ham sandwiches and egg wraps were delicious although I did miss the traditional element of the egg sandwich! The smoked salmon though was a little disappointing as it was the smallest piece of salmon with far too much cream cheese on the brown bread.
Onto the scones and breads. Scones with jam and cream have to be one of life’s simplest and most delicious pleasures and these ones were perfect. I’ll always pass on the banana bread (hate bananas!) and the fruit cake was nice, nothing special though in flavour or taste. So this was layer was a mixed success!
And the top level… all the lovely sweet things! Pannacotta was creamy with a lovely balance between the passion fruit and raspberry. Lemon meringue and Bailey’s cheesecake were both good too, but the chocolate mousse cup, wow! Rich chocolatey loveliness… yum! What I liked about the sweet layer is that nothing was too heavy. Even though the chocolate was rich it was small so you felt able to try everything.
A really enjoyable Afternoon Tea, quite traditional in what was served and the style but very nice way to spend an hour or two. Definitely worth doing if you are staying at the hotel and also good value.
