Review ~ Sharing Boards & Wine at Ely, Grand Canal Square and Seapoint, Monkstown

On two recent evenings, we’ve enjoyed lovely charcuterie, cheese or seafood sharing platters with wine, in Ely in Grand Canal Dock and Seapoint in Monkstown…

It was a nice day, warm, not too sunny though, but we still decided to sit outside on the terrace area and watch all the going-ons in Gand Canal Square…

We had the ‘From the Sea’ Gastro Bar Platter (€25) which was piled high with smoked salmon, brown crab rillette, calamari, crayfish cocktail, lemon, salsa verde and homemade brown bread. If there is any criticism its that there was too much of the fried calamari and not enough of the smoked salmon which was really good. Its a nice sharing dish though for 2. We also had a side of fries to accompany our seafood. We both loved this platter and its great value too. Perfect size to share for 2 or more if its just a light bite.

With Ely, one of the main selling points is their wine list. We enjoyed a lovely bottle of Californian Zinfandel with our food. But really you could spend hours perusing the wine list, I love the selection by the glass too, nice if you want to try different wines.

On another evening not too long ago, we ventured out for a walk around Dun Laoghaire and ended up in Monkstown. We decided to sit outside Seapoint, they have a little terrace patio area just to the right of the restaurant, through an archway, its completely covered.

We sat there and enjoyed a couple of carafes of red wine – the wine list at Seapoint is really good, lots of choice by glass, carafe and bottle.

With our red wine, we had one of their sharing boards, ‘Selection of Italian meats, olives,  tapenade, artichokes, courgettes’ (€12.50pp) and also a plate of 3 cheeses (€6.75). We loved the charcuterie, a great selection of salamis and hams, grilled vegetables – percect accompaniment to our wine! The cheeses were great, big wedges of farmhouse style cheeses, crackers, grapes.

I love this kind of food, sharing platters and boards – picking and choosing and enjoyed nice red wine with it. These are 2 great places to do just that, both with very good wine lists and really lovely food.
