Mt. Everest of Kathmandu, Bray

Mt. Everest of Kathmandu is a Tibetan and Nepalese restaurant in Bray, Co. Wicklow. It’s modern in design and has touches of Tibet and Nepal in the wall decor and art… more of this might give the place a better feel. But to be honest the reason for visiting is the food, and the people that work there. The food is authentic and the quality is evident in every dish. The chefs are Nepalese, dishes can be cooked to order in terms of spice level and the waiting staff are just so friendly and attentive, without being overly so.

Onto the best part of a visit to Mt. Everest of Kathmandu – the food. 3 of our party went with the early bird menu, priced at €15.95, it is very good value. I was the difficult one and decided I wanted a dish not on this menu! We also happily worked our way through a couple of baskets of crispy poppadoms with dips while ordering before out starters arrive.

To start there was Choso Masu (chicken wings), Achari Kukhura, chicken marinated with mix pickles and cooked in tandoor and Onion Bhaji. The best were the chicken wings, beautiful tandoori flavour wings, so much flavour…

For mains, there was a Chicken Babari Masala which is described as a ‘Minty Tomato based creamy sauce with grounded cashew nuts’ – the ‘minty’ word put me off a bit but it was a very subtle taste and a gorgeously creamy curry. I ordered Palak Ra Masu, which is Spinach cooked with fenugreek sauce and fresh herbs – there’s a choice of chicken, lamb or prawns but I chose chicken this time. Two of our party went for vegetarian main courses – a chickpea and lentil dish, spicy and flavoursome.

Accompanying our main courses we had pilau rice and boiled rice and possibly the best garlic naan bread I’ve ever tasted!

With our food, we drank a lovely Californian Beringer Zinfandel (really well priced at €28), there was also a couple of glasses of white wine and Cobra beer at our table. Overall Mt. Everest of Kathmandu delivers great food at great prices. It’s not a place you will spend hours eating and drinking, but I’m always glad to visit and I already can’t wait to go back… Enjoy!
